AmeriCorps
In addition to Academy Prep’s ten full-time academic and arts faculty, Academy Prep partners with the AmeriCorps Notre Dame Mission Volunteers program for additional specialty teachers. Annually, about 5-6 AmeriCorps volunteers call Academy Prep home. They live on campus in comfortable, spacious, fully-furnished apartments, with rent and utilities covered by Academy Prep. The AmeriCorps volunteers are an integral part of Academy Prep: they teach supplemental academic classes like English 2, oversee serving breakfast, lunch, and snack, and teach our enrichment program classes. Academy Prep’s specialty teachers from AmeriCorps come to the organization with a wide range of talents, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. Many of the current Academy Prep faculty/staff once began with Academy Prep as AmeriCorps volunteers.
AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. AmeriCorps provides full-time members to community organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. In addition to having rent and utilities covered, Academy Prep’s AmeriCorps teachers receive a modest monthly stipend, a bi-weekly food allowance, and a significant education scholarship at the conclusion of the service year.
